What on earth is "east coast style"?

I never looked at that as flipping the bird -- maybe it's just because I've seen the original source, and know it's your pointer finger.

Ha! I should have counted the knuckles. I guess I just really wanted it to be the bird...
East coast style is making a fist and jutting up the finger. Vs., Southern California style, the fingers surrounding the middle finger are in a kind of sitting up and bowing position. It's hard for me to even do it the fist way.
